LINER NOTES:  These lyrics were inspired by a few of the cards we received during the holiday season of 2005. My mother-in-law, Phyllis Kelly-Bouza, is a painter and sends out a card-sized version of one of her paintings every year. This one was called "Tree of Life" and it had an array of colors that remind you of an abstract stained glass. The other was from my cousin, Dean, who lives on the East Coast. It was of a lone pine bough lying in the snow. I loved its simplicity.

Just a note to say, despite this song's content, I am in no way judgmental about the Christmas Card thing. There have been years we haven't gotten around to sending one out. I do love to get the notes and letters that tell what a person has been up to, but I'm not dissing those who don't have time for that.

CHRISTMAS CARDS is also included on IDAHO HO HO, a compilation CD published in 2010 by Moxie Java

Lyrics

LYRICS:

Red and green and gold, purple blue and rose / A lone pine bough lying in the snow / One a tree of life, the other pure and white / Everything I need to remind me of a hope-filled life

CHORUS #1: CHRISTMAS CARDS COME TO MY DOOR LIKE SO MANY YEARS BEFORE / BRINGING NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR / I LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU EACH YEAR

Some only sign their names-- indicate that they are alive and well on the other side of their town / Others pen their news complete with pictures too / A window into the journey they survived this year

repeat chorus #1 (…hear from you each year): GLAD TO SEE YOU STILL BELIEVE BUT A WORD OR TWO I THRILL TO SEE / PENNED FROM YOU ABOUT YOUR LIFE / I LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU IN WINTER TIME

Bridge: Oh the written word – a window into your world / Keep alive the friendships and the family ties / Cards of Christmas cheer – traverse the earth each year / Can we try to not let this tradition die?

C:  CHRISTMAS CARDS COME TO MY DOOR LIKE SO MANY YEARS BEFORE / BRINGING NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR / I LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU EACH YEAR

Story

My brother, Terry Lester, passed away unexpectedly in November 2005. Being in the midst of my Christmas CD project I wanted to write something for him, yet wanted to keep it somewhat Christmassy in feeling. What came was a song that captures a sweet childhood memory of Terry teaching Steven and I how to ski in the back woods of Maine. David was only 3 or 4 so didn't participate in this venture but I'm sure he was enjoying his tonka trucks while we froze outside! Karl was in the Marines at the time so wasn't home that Christmas. Terry was 1 year older than Karl, 6 years older than Steven, 12 years older than me and almost 18 years older than Davey, so when he was home, he was always teaching us how to do something! This song captures that heart of the instructer but only touches on the depth of the type of person he was to all of us.

Lyrics

LYRICS:

We each have our memories / a lacey snowflake patterned in a dream of you / And so mine can be a song for you / How do you fit a life into a line or two?

We had just moved out to Maine Back to the East Coast again /  You made the trip with us and I was 6 or so / We moved into a wonderland of snow

CHORUS: I REMEMBER THAT CHRISTMAS WHEN SANTA BROUGHT US SKIIS / YOU BECAME INSTRUCTOR ON THE BACK ROADS OF WINTER / WE WERE ALL ELBOWS AND KNEES / OH, THAT CHRISTMAS OH THAT CHRISTMAS DREAM

Fast forward 2 years / Sun Valley Idaho with you / Photographs of black and white - that precious one of you / How you always did things “right” / We wanted to be like you

CHORUS: I REMEMBER THAT CHRISTMAS WHEN SANTA BROUGHT US SKIIS / YOU BECAME INSTRUCTOR ON THE BACK ROADS OF WINTER / WE WERE ALL ELBOWS AND KNEES / OH, THAT CHRISTMAS OH THAT CHRISTMAS DREAM

Bridge: Mom and you were mother and son / Theresa was your only little one / Susan was your lovely queen of hearts / You and Dave went golfing / You and Steve played chess / You and Karl built model airplanes / And you and Dad were blessed to fly the real thing

CHORUS: I REMEMBER THAT CHRISTMAS WHEN SANTA BROUGHT US SKIIS (THANKS MOM AND DAD!) YOU BECAME INSTRUCTOR ON THE BACK ROADS OF WINTER / STEVE AND I ALL ELBOWS AND KNEES /IT WAS THAT BAD OH, THAT CHRISTMAS OH, THAT CHRISTMAS DREAM I REMEMBER THAT CHRISTMAS... THAT CHRISTMAS DREAM (TAG THIS)

Story

Our family Christmas tree has always been a muse for the holidays.  For me it subtly represents the reason for the season, as the saying goes.

Lyrics

LYRICS:

Evergreen, you’re beautiful to me / Boughs are reaching out so gracefully / Evergreen – a sight to see - with gold and silver glowing breathtakingly

C:  I LOVE YOUR BEAUTY AND SPLENDOR / THE PEACE YOU BRING AT NIGHT /THE WAY THAT YOU HELP ME REMEMBER THE REASON FOR CHRISTMAS TIME / WHILE YOU ARE GLOWING I’M PRAYING ALL THE WORLD MAY SEE EVERGREEN WHAT YOU ARE SAYING TO ME

Evergreen, a comfort here / When in troubled times a hope is dear / Evergreen, your purpose clear—a beacon in the night—love embraces fear

C:  I LOVE YOUR BEAUTY AND SPLENDOR THE PEACE YOU BRING AT NIGHT / THE WAY THAT YOU HELP ME REMEMBER THE REASON FOR CHRISTMAS TIME / WHILE YOU ARE GLOWING I’M PRAYING ALL THE WORLD MAY SEE EVERGREEN WHAT YOU ARE SAYING TO ME

Bridge: Peace on earth—Goodwill to men—Need it so, return again Repeat chorus and end.

Story

Written for my husband in memory of a long winter walk we took one night.

Lyrics

LYRICS:

Winter World Crystal frost on glass - cider in the flask - won’t you take a walk with me tonight? No one round for miles - just you, me and your smile - oh, so warm like a cozy fire

CHORUS: OH WON’T YOU TAKE A WALK WITH ME TONIGHT, TONIGHT THIS WINTER WORLD WITH YOU I LIKE X2

Snowflakes on my tongue - count them just for fun as the whole world turns to white Two-man snowball fight - hysterical delight - oh, so cold must go back inside

CHORUS: OH WON’T YOU TAKE A WALK WITH ME TONIGHT, TONIGHT THIS WINTER WORLD WITH YOU I LIKE X2

Bridge: Always remember this winter night Like a favorite photo never far from sight

Repeat chorus a few times and end.

Two 17th Century Carols
Produced by Steve Fulton / Audio Lab

Story

Old world carols are among my favorite. It’s amazing how they’ve been passed down over centuries and remained intact even if varied over time. It’s equally amazing how the birth of Jesus has been immortalized through some of these songs and his story remains the same as it was then.

Lyrics

LYRICS:

COVENTRY CAROL  (English Carol 17th century or earlier)

Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child, Bye bye, lully lullay.

Thou little tiny child, Bye bye, lully lullay.

O sisters too how may we do For to preserve this day

This poor youngling For whom we do sing; Bye bye, lully lullay.

Herod, the king in his raging, charg-ed he hath this day

His men of might, in his own sight, all young children to slay.

That woe is me, poor child for thee! And ever morn and day

For thy parting neither say nor sing; Bye bye, lully lullay

ZU WEIHNACHTEN (German Christmas Song. 1607-1676 Adapted poem by Paul Herhardt ; Melody by J.S. Bach 1685-1750)

I stand beside thy cradle here O Jesus child so tender

All which thou hast given me which I to thee surrender

Take then my spirit, take my soul;

My heart and mind are wholly yours

Graciously receive them.

In darkness black, in death I lay; (thou) sun, dispell’d my sadness

(Thou) broughtest heav’nly light of day; a life of joy and gladness

O sun, how beautiful thy rays;

Thy holy words of faith I praise

O Lord, I do believe them.

Story

Another song for the one and only Stan to celebrate the season.

Lyrics

LYRICS:

Christmas Present ~ Christmas Past

Haven’t figured out yet how to make it last

Gonna buy a gift for you before the day be through

And let my heart celebrate you

Chorus: Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas Dear (x2)

Christmas Beauty ~ Christmas Hues

No time now for duty or Winter blues

Gonna wear my red dress just for you

Fill my heart with tenderness anew

repeat chorus.

Bridge: And I wish you a bright new year

So glad we’re together ~ still need you near

And here’s to wishing all your dreams come true

All you’ve ever wanted happening for you

Chorus: Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas Dear (x4)

Story

Ian came up with this delectable arrangement of White Christmas.  He managed to infuse it with originality - which is quite a feat considering it's the most recorded Christmas song EVER!
