Story
Recorded in 1998 on my Simple Things CD, this song is a lament of the passing of the beautiful fields west of Boise. I used to take walks along the fields we lived close to or would drive out in the country when the children were younger. The suburban sprawl was beginning to spread even then. Looking back, I now see it was just the tip of the iceberg. I feel even more strongly about this song than I did when I wrote it.
Also, my friend Cameron Ventura came over one night and we worked on this song together since I wasn't finished with it yet and I really wanted something good to come of it. Even though it didn't completely take the direction it was going when we worked on it, his imprint is definitely on this song, so I want to mention him here.
Later I added the bridge which is a verse I found in Lamentations an Old Testament book of the Bible. It seemed to capture the feeling so well and fit in with the song. Finally, in production, Ian's interpretative layers of a bagpipe and drumming echo the feeling of loss and acceptance - the letting go of what once was to what the fields have become.
